The Washington Bengals Cricket Club (WBCC) was founded in 1994 by a small group of cricket lovers who had immigrated from South Asia. Most of us had played cricket back home and wanted to continue our love affair with the game. With few resources and even fewer players, we first started playing in tennis courts. As more and more people became interested in joining us we formulated a full-fledged team and approached the Washington Cricket League (WCL) for membership. Our first year was a lot of fun, but the reality of playing against organized, well-trained teams started to sink in. We were motivated by our losses and resolved to get better. Our greatest asset was our fair play, friendly atmosphere and willingness to include anybody who had love for the game regardless of their ethnic background or talent level. By our second year we had players from Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. As word spread about the dramatic improvements the Bengals had made in their second year itself, more and more players were drawn towards the team. By 1997 the Bengals had made the playoffs and in 1999 played in the League championship game.

Today, the Bengals is considered one of the premier teams in the league and is highly regarded for it's fair play and friendly atmosphere. We are one of the few teams that have never had any discipline problem with the league. With the growing number of people drawn to the team, we started a second team to provide our younger players a platform to perform and improve. The Bengals team joined the newly formed Washington Metropolitan Cricket Board (WMCB) in 2000 and in it's very first year won several awards and trophies, including the league championship. Today, this team boasts of three U-19 U.S. East regional players, vying for a spot in the U-19 national team to play in international competition. Today, we have players from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka, England and Australia. We are the only truly global team in the Washington area. This is a testament to the friendly atmosphere and an all-inclusive philosophy that has been the cornerstone of the club.
